Hi, I’m Beverley BevenFlorez. A writing coach & editor in Los Angeles.
About Me
I earned an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts as well as a BA in English with an option in literature from the California State University, Long Beach. I have almost two decades of experience in giving and receiving critiques, in both academic as well as conference settings, having attended over ten writers’ retreats, events, conferences, and workshops, including the SCBWI Summer Conference, the Big Sur Writing Workshop, and the Pacific Coast Children’s Writers Workshop.
Currently, I’m a writing coach, a judge for the Ink and Insights Writing Contest, Editor of the Construction Defect Journal, and a freelance writer and editor. As a writing coach, I enjoy guiding writers through their projects and helping them strengthen their craft.
“Bev is a wise and encouraging editor. She’s helped me craft my manuscript in ways that have vastly improved it. Bev instructs as she edits. Her notes provided examples from other novels and writers to point out how I could improve a scene or more fully develop a character. Not only has she helped me write a better novel, but she has also helped me become a better writer.”

Writing Coaching
Ever wish you could have a writing class fitted to exactly what you need? If so, then my One-on-One Writing Coaching may be perfect for you.
Every month, you will email up to 50 pages of your manuscript (new, revised, or a mix of both) along with a letter that details your struggles, triumphs and any questions you have for me.
Then, in 3 to 7 days, I will email you a detailed editorial letter that covers topics that are relevant to the work submitted. For instance, if your scenes/chapters seem interchangeable, I could talk about the need for narrative thrust. If the work contains a lot of telling, then I would also include sections on Authorial Intrusion and Showing rather than Telling.
In addition, I will answer any questions you included in your letter to me.
You will also receive line edits and comments on your manuscript itself.
During the month, you have the opportunity to email me directly with questions. Not only will you grow as a writer from this experience, but you will also have a monthly deadline that encourages you to finish your project.
Developmental Editing
I will look at your manuscript as a whole and provide you with an in-depth critique of your novel. You will receive a detailed editorial letter that covers the following topics: Characters, Plot and Structure, Dialogue and Narrative, Setting and Descriptions, and others relevant to your work. In addition, I will provide you with a suggested plan of how to revise your novel. This does not include any comments or line edits on the manuscript itself.
Developmental Editing (with Limited Line Edits)
In addition to the detailed editorial letter above, I will also provide some line edits and comments on the manuscript itself. Please note that I will not revise the work for you. My line edits will be a teaching tool to help guide you in improving your manuscript and writing techniques.
Beta Reading
Friends and family may not feel comfortable giving honest feedback of your novel. I’ll read your completed novel and provide you with a document that details what I thought worked and places that need some attention prior to publication.
